HLHS, Hemi-Fontan

Sayde
I found out I was pregnant in June of 2008, while my husband was in Iraq. Shortly after that, I thought I was miscarrying because of the bleeding I was having. It turns out that I was still pregnant and I had a small hemorrhage, which caused the bleeding.

At my 18 week appt, I found out I was having a girl, but they couldn't get a good picture of her heart. They sent me to have a level 2 ultrasound. On October 15th, I found out that she had a heart condition. They sent me to the cardiologist to get more information. On October 31, they told me about her condition and it was HLHS. Since finding out, everything had been normal, except 2 trips to the hospital for early labor.

The doctors stopped the contractions the first time and the second turned out to be Braxton Hicks. After meeting with my doctors, they decided to induce me since the surgeon was going out of town. I was admitted to the hospital on February 20, and was in labor for 2 hours. My daughter, Sayde, was then rushed up to the NICU, without me even getting to hold her.

Sayde was having some breathing difficulties. They got her hooked up to the necessary machines, and in a couple of days, they performed the first of three surgeries. She was in the hospital for 3 weeks after the first surgery. Once she was home, the only problem she really had was feeding. it took her an hour to eat 4 oz. The doctor couldn't figure out why, so when we went to the cardiologist; they found out that it was her medicine. They changed it a little and she did fine after that.

Sayde's second surgery was August 20th. She did amazingly well with that. She was only in the hospital for 4 days.

She has been doing great since then. Only ear infections and ear tubes since then. Her next and last surgery is going to be in the spring/summer of 2011.

— Aimee and Dustin, Sayde's parents (upstate New York)
