Layla

HLHS, Norwood Procedure, Hemi-Fontan, Fontan

Layla

Layla was born on September 6, 2002 at Winthrop University Hospital and diagnosed with HLHS on September 7th. She was then transported to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NY, where she underwent the Norwood procedure on 9/11/02 with minimal complications.

On September 18th, she was transported back to Long Island to continue her recovery and we thought be discharged from that institution. Unfortunately, she began desaturating into the 50's and had to return to Columbia for a possible catheterization. She was monitored closely in the CRC and was found to have no desats and the cardiac catheterization was deferred. On October 11th, Layla was discharged!

Since then, Layla has given us no problems, and has been behaving like any heart healthy 6 month-old does. She sleeps through the night, is sitting up, rolling over and trying to get into things!

January 2005 Update

Layla has now completed her three stage Norwood procedure as of September, 2004. She had her hemi-Fontan and Fontan completion surgeries both at CHONY. Her Hemi-Fontan was on April 1, 2003 at 8 months. She was home five days after surgery. Her Fontan was on September 8, 2004 two days after her second birthday. She had a long haul after her Fontan, with a hospital stay of 33 days, but now she is running around all over the place and is a non-stop talker like any typical toddler.

— Jennifer, Layla's mother (Long Island, NY)
