Lance Edward

HRHS, Glenn, ASD, VSD

Emory and Lance

Lance was born July 14, 2003. My pregnancy and delivery were normal. My husband and I had no idea there was a problem until 3 hours after Lance was born. He was taken to the nursery for testing and that is when we got news that Lance had a heart murmur.

Lance was taken to the N.I.C.U. We were told someone would come in and talk to us. The hours passed and we then found out his heart defect was HRHS, ASD, VSD. We were in shock. Lance finally came home with us and we knew we had a long road ahead of us.

A few months later we took him to Children's Healthcare Of Atlanta for one of three heart caths that would be done. Lance did fine and at the next cath that was performed, they ballooned his pulmonary valve in hopes this would cause his right ventricle to grow. The third cath was done and we found Lance needed to have the Glenn surgery done as soon as possible—that was news we did not want to hear. On January 16, 2004 Lance had his Glenn and we all did great with the love and support of our family.

Lance is doing well and is closely monitored by his cardiologist Dr. McConell, whom we are so thankful for. It is inevitable that someday down the road Lance will need the Fontan.

We are taking it day by day and we are counting our blessings and enjoying our sweet little boys. Lance has a proud big brother Emory who, like a trooper, has handled all this very well. Lance is such a sweet happy baby.

— Christina. Doug, and big brother Emory (Locust Grove, Georgia)
