Keifer Robert

HLHS, B-T Shunt

We believe things happen for a reason. Keifer's right ventricle didn't fully develop and we didn't find out till the 38th week. It was discovered by pure luck. Keifer's grandfather died and in order for me to travel by plane to funeral I had to have extra sonograms which showed my amniotic fluid was low. I was able to get my fluids level back up and went to the funeral but when we came back I told my doctor that I didn't feel baby was moving as much as my other four babies had. Another sono was done and the sono tech said she would right back and was gone a long time.

That was the longest wait of my life, they sent me to a perinatal specialist to confirm and then sent me to a cardiologist. She advised us that his left ventricle didn't fully develop and explained the B-T shunt, Glenn shunt and Fontan shunt. We were given a week to get everything ready and they induced 10 days early. We got to pick the day and chose his grandmother's birthday which i hoped would be some comfort after the loss of her husband a few weeks before.

We had to change hospitals and doctors immediately. Luckily again, my doctor had a friend at the new hospital that agreed to deliver. The new hospital was almost an hour's drive from our house. We had to make arrangements for someone to stay and care for our other 4 children.

The delivery was fine; I got to see him before his was whisked away to the NICU. He weighed 6 lbs 7 oz at birth, the same exact weight as his father. Keifer's middle named came from his grandfathers; they both have the same first name. During delivery the doctor told us her dad's name was also the same name.

Keifer had the B-T shunt when he was 4 days old and spent a month in NICU. He got to come home the day before thanksgiving!!! Keifer has made a speedy recovery and getting ready for his next surgery, the Glenn shunt. He  has doubled his birth weight and sleeps through the night.

Keifer is an inspiration and joy to all his family and friends.

— Brenda and Keith, Keifer's parents (Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas)
