Josiah Samuel

Tricuspid Atresia and Truncus Arteriosus, Glenn

Josiah

My story begins when I married the man of my dreams in 2005. We looked forward to starting a family immediately, but those were not God's plan. We tried for 3 years, but no success. I went to doctor after doctor and our last resort was an IVF clinic.

When we went and were finally going to start treatments, the week before I suspected I was pregnant and took a pregnancy test, and I was right! Before all of this, in 2006, I suffered from endometriosis and ended up having to have surgery to remove my right ovary and my right fallopian tube.

So of coarse we were excited by the news! But when I was 4 months pregnant, I was given the news that my baby had a heart defect. we were devastated but decided to keep going with the strength from above and our faith.

We started going to the best hospital for these circumstances, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and we are so grateful for them. My son was born in 2009 and was a miracle even though he has two very rare heart defects. The doctors have been amazing, he had surgery to have the B-T Shunt placed when he was just 5 days old, and then had the Glenn procedure when he was 4 months old. We are now awaiting his 3rd and hopefully final surgery when he is 2 or 3 years old.

Also when he was born, he had an undescended testicle and a hernia, which he had surgery for when he was a month and 3 weeks old. They found that he actually had 2 hernias.

Right now we are enjoying Josiah, having fun, and every moment with him is special.

— Arelis and Sam, Josiah's parents (Philadelphia, PA)
