La Shawn

Double Outlet Right Ventricle, Hypoplastic Left Ventricle; bi-directional Glenn Shunt

We knew La Shawn's condition long before he arrived. Thank god for the wisdom of ultrasound. So we had time to learn a lot beforehand, and ask a ton of questions. He was the most beautiful baby boy i had ever seen!

Nothing prepared us for how he looked after the first surgery, the pulmonary artery banding he was 2 months old. It was done on a Thursday, by Friday he swelled to three times his normal size, and was put on a vent. By Sunday am we were told the band had slipped and was blocking blood to his right lung. he would need to go thru it all again on Monday. As informed as we thought we were, we never imagined this could be possible, and seeing him go thru it was the worst day of our lives!

La Shawn spent 5 weeks in the hospital, in Milwaukee. His eating was never good and now he seemed to tire even quicker. The decision to place a MIC-KEY button was made, and tube feedings began, along with endless vomiting. He could hit the wall 2 feet away. At times we were ready to call 911 out of fear that he couldn't catch his breath.

The next surgery that was planned, the Glenn when he was 4 months old, was postponed twice because of RSV. He spent another 3 weeks between two hospitals and had his first (and we hope last) life flight to Milwaukee Children's hospital. He finally got the Glenn, after 12 hours and a nicked artery he was in recovery. This went much better for him and 7 days later he was home.

It has been a year now since anything major has happened. he is still tube fed, tries to eat regular foods, and is the funniest most amazing baby I have ever seen. His doctors are impressed! Looking at him you would never know he is different, except the tube. There is still a lot ahead for him and us, but God is in control and how ever prepared you are for this journey, make sure he is with you. The power of prayer should not be left out. It will comfort you, and with with a good team of doctors, anything is possible

— Theresa , La Shawn's grandma (northern Wisconsin)
